The Department in addition to its M.Phil & Ph.D. degree programmes, also started Master of Science in Applied Chemistry in 1995. The Department has the previlege of being the first in the province to offer such a programme in Applied Chemistry.
The history of the department is as old as the institution itself. It was known as the Science Department in the days of Maclagan Engineering College (1921), which imparted instructions in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry & Maths as an integral part of the academic courses in engineering. It was divided into the independent departments of Physics, Chemistry and mathematics in 1961 with the forming of the University. The department has its role in providing testing facility & technical advice to chemical industry.
An important feature of the M.Sc. course is compulsory factory training followed by seminars in the areas of training which provide opportunities to the staff and the students of the department to establish contacts with the chemists & technologists in industries. One of the key objectives of the course is orientation of the students towards self employment. Steps are taken to improve the research and development potential of the department, to familiarize the students with the technological advances in chemical process industries, excursions are made to industrial establishments.
