The Institute of Environmental Engineering & Research was established as institute of public Health Engineering and research in the year 1972, However, a beginning in public health engineering studies was made earlier in 1961. The Institute has been renamed as Institute of Environmental Engineering & Research in 1996.

The Institute has a vast research center one of the biggest in the country. It has highly equipped and technically well developed computer and research labs...the Research center is carrying out research work in vast fields of Environmental Engineering.

COURSES:-

The Department offers following Courses at post-graduate level:

a) Master's Degree Course in Public Health/Environmental Engineering.

b) Ph.D. Degree in Public Health Engineering.

The Master's course is offered both for full-time and part-time students. The World Health Organization offers some fellow ships for the full time students. The Ph.D. Degree is earned by research on topics of Environmental & Public Health Engineering.

LABORATORIES & OTHER FACILITIES:-

The Institute has well equipped laboratories one of the best available , it has laboratory facilities in the following areas:

* Water Quality Testing.

* Unit Processes.

* Water Pollution Control.

* Air Pollution Monitoring.

* Sanitary Microbiology.

The Institute has a well - stocked library with a large number of books and journals on Environment & Public Health Engineering.

RESEARCH EXTENSION & ADVISORY SERVICES:-

In Addition to the teaching programmes, the institute is engaged in various activities for advancement of Environmental Engineering in the country. Some of these are as follows:-

RESEARCH & INVESTIGATION:-

Research & Investigation on Environmental and Public Health Engineering are undertaken by the post graduate students and the faculty members . Some Research projects are sponsored by engineering firms , industries and public agencies. These projects play an important role in finding solution to the problems of Environmental Engineering in Pakistan.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES & REFRESHER COURSES:-

The Institute has offered numerous training programmes and refresher courses for the inservice personal and field engineers from various organizations. It also Organizes national and international seminars and symposia on issues of environmental engineering in the context of local requirements.

 CONSULTANCY & ADVISORY SERVICES:-

The Institute offers advisory and consultancy services to industries, municipalities and private organizations on a variety of  environmental engineering issues such as following:-

..............Water & wastewater testing, Air pollution control, Solid Waste Management , Environmental impact assessment.

..............Investigation of rural and urban water supply and sanitation systems;

..............Planning and design of water and wastewater treatment facilities, and pre-investment study of Environmental Engineering projects.

RESEARCH CENTER LABORATORIES:-

Following Important laboratories have been set up in the research center to meet the modern requirements of today, these laboratories are on of the best or the best in the country & one of the best in the region... where modern research work is carried out.... the names of these laboratories are as follows:-

5. Automotive System & Energy Conservation Laboratory.

apart from these labs other labs have also been setup in the center which makes the Research center the only of its kind in the country.
