The Department of Mechanical Engineering, one of the oldest in the country and the region, was founded with the University in 1921 as part of the Mughalpura Technical College, the Department has a total enrollment of about 1,500 students.

CAPACITY, MERIT & ELIGIBILITY:-

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers for B.Sc courses a total of 195 seats per year ,out of which 159 seats are for open merit punjab Domicile category.

Merit wise the department stands at 2nd Position.

The candidate must have passed his/her Intermediate with Pre-Engineering subjects or B.Sc with Physics & Mathematics, or an equivalent examination or certificate as recognized by the University.

COURSES;-

The Department offers the following program of studies;

a) Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

b) Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in;

1. Production Engineering.

2. Power Engineering.

3. Stress Analysis.

c) Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.

Curriculum for the Bachelor's Degree:-

The Curriculum for Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering includes the latest  subjects of today's industry, and one of the best courses comparable with the other institutions of the region are offered which include:

Mathematics,  Computer Techniques & Humanities, Mechanics of Material, Thermodynamics, Hydraulic Machinery, Machine Design, Machine Tools, Refrigeration & Air conditioning, Energy Resources & Utilization, Quality Control, Instrumentation & control, Mechanical Vibration, Power plants, Operation Research & Production management.

Instructional tours are undertaken to acquaint the students with projects of national importance in Mechanical Engineering.

LABORATORIES & OTHER FACILITIES:-

The Department has one of the best and well equipped laboratories in the country and the region equally comparable with the other institutions of asia, the department has laboratories in the following areas:

1. Applied Thermodynamics.

2. Heat Transfer.

3. Mechanics of Materials.

4. Gas Dynamics.

5. Metrology.

6. Mechanics of Machines.

7. Air-Cond. & Refrigertaion.

8. Machine Tools.

9. Hydraulic Tools.

10. Stress Analysis.

11. Computer Center.

12. Energy Resources.

13. CNC-CAD/CAM.

14. Hydraulics & Fluid Flow.

ENERGY RESOURCES CENTER:-

The Department has an Energy Resources Center where work is being conducted on power plant using conventional and non-conventional resources of energy. This Center has made extensive studies on micro hydel plants, solar collectors, solar water pumps, solar dryer, solar heating & cooling systems.

The Department has also set up a nucleus of low Temperature Machines and Stirling Cycle Machines working as heat pumps.

Current Research includes Optimization of solar desalination units, Design of Solar Cookers, Wind Pumps, Rice Husk Gasification & Biogas production.

RESEARCH EXTENSION & ADVISORY SERVICES:-

The Department provides full opportunity to the faculty members and post graduate students for research, some areas of research currently going on in the department are : Low Cost automation, use of L.P.G in I.C Engines, Shear stiffness & buckling of corrugated-shear-webs etc..etc...

The Department also offers refresher courses in various fields of Mechanical Engineering to the industries. It arranges lectures/seminars on different technical aspects of Mechanical Engineering by local and foreign experts.

The department also renders services to a large number of organizations in the fields of Production Engineering, Stress Analysis & Thermal Sciences.

UNIVERSITY WORKSHOPS:-

The University Workshops were established in 1937 and are designed to provide known-how and practical training in workshop technology to the Engineering Students of various Technologies. A package practical course, titled "Work Shop Practice" is offered to the students of B.Sc. Engineering Degree Programmes.  The students thus acquire ample expertise through practical assignments in handling modern tools & plants.
