The Department was established in 1954, and has the distinction of being the first in the country to offer a formal degree course in Mining Engineering. At present total enrollment of students is 150.

CAPACITY, MERIT & ELIGIBILITY:-

The Department of Mining Engineering offers for its Bachelor's course per session a total of about 53 seats, out of which 38 seats are for Punjab domicile category 'A'.

Merit wise the department stands at 8th - 9th Position.

A candidate applying for Bachelor's Degree course in Mining Engineering must have passed his/her Intermediate with pre-engineering subjects. A candidate applying on the basis of B.Sc. Degree must have passed his/her Bachelor's examination with any of the two following subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Geology.

COURSES:-

The department offers the following courses of study....

1) Bachelor's degree course in Mining Engineering.

2) Master's degree course Mining Engineering.

3) Ph. D. degree in Mining Engineering.

Curriculum for Bachelor's Degree:-

The Bachelor's Degree curriculum offers basic and common subjects in science and engineering in the first two years, and in later two years it covers relevant subjects in mining operations, geology, mineral economics and management, mine environment in detail.

Curriculum for Master's Degree:-

Specialization is offered in the fields of Rock Mechanics, Mineral Dressing, Environmental Control, Mineral Economics and Excavation Engineering.

 Facilities are also available for advanced research leading to Ph.D.

LABORATORY & OTHER FACILITIES:-

The department has the following major laboratories.

4) Mine Ventilation

5) Mineralogy

6) Petrology

7) Structural Geology

8) Mine Rescue & Safety

9) Geological Exploration

10) Drilling & Blasting

Other facilities include a good departmental library, a computer center for postgraduate research, atomic absorption spectrophotometer and XRF of chemical analysis lab, a modern Total Survey Station, and a 200 ton Universal testing machine.

RESEARCH:-

A number of faculty  research projects were undertaken by the department in the recent past, a few of them are given below.

1) Indus Heavy Sands Benefication.

2) Benefication Studies of Chromatic Ores of Pakistan.

3) Washability Studies of Pakistani Coals including that of Lakhra coal Deposits.

4) Activation Studies of D.G. Khan Fuller's Earth Deposits.

5) Geological Studies of Salt Range Rock Deposits.

6) Up-gradation of Pakistani Graphite Ores.

7) Washability Studies of Mianwali Silica Sand.

8) Construction of Mines Design Models for laboratory demonstration.

9) Determination of Mechanical and Physical properties of rocks.

10) Fragmentation Improvement at the Limestone Quarries of Punjab.

11) Pillar Stability Assessment of Khewara Salt Mines.

12) Development of Stability Assessment Protocol for Rock Slopes.

13) Sand level measurements at one Quarry of Punjab.

14) Blasting Studies at Quarries of Punjab.

15) Roof Support Studies for mines.
