The University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, enjoys the honor of being the only technical institute in Pakistan to accommodate with its campus one of the largest Science museum in the country. TELEPHONE CONTACTS:- The Important contact numbers for the museum, regarding any information are as follows: 042 - 330174 042 - 330210 042 - 336721 BACKGROUND:- The Museum of Science & Technology(UET) was established by the Federal Ministry of Education in 1965 for UET students & faculty. It was afterwards opened to the general public in 1976. The main purpose of the museum is to act as a center for the promotion of science through non-formal means; i.e. to promote the scientific interest of students as well as general public. Today the UET, National Museum of Science & Technology, is one of the most visited places by the local and out of city school & college students. The school's and colleges arrange trips for their students so they can get a amazing touch of enhanced scientific environment. The museum also arranges scientific project competitions among the school & college students every year , in order to give the future of the country a full opportunity to participate in scientific & creative activities. EXHIBITS:- In view of its specific purpose the museum is not a depository of scientific inventions; it rather develops, acquires & displays working educational models of such a kind that > They depict the basic principles of science & Technology. > They are visitor-operated so as to attract the latter's practical participation in understanding the principle behind each scientific display. > They are close to the requirement of the students of science in particular & the rest in general. > They are simple to comprehend & produce qualitative rather that quantitative results. > Also the projects are displayed in a studying as well as recreational environment, so that fun & serious study go side by side with each other. Information about the Exhibits:- Each Exhibit has been provided with a descriptive label which contains all the essential information about that exhibit, as well as provides extra information which otherwise cannot be shown through that exhibit. With a view to attracting attention, sound as well as light & shade effects have also been given where necessary. The exhibits are purely educational in character & provide answers to questions that arise in an inquiring mind which has been exposed to the scientific and technological developments that have taken place during the last quarter of the twentieth century. The exhibits remain under constant review as a result of which the displays in the museum are not always the same. Major Subjects on Display:- The Exhibits on display in the museum belong to many important & major branches of science some of the important ones are as follows:- > BIOLOGY. > MECHANICS. > MACHINES. > HEAT ENGINES. > MATHEMATICS. > FLUID MECHANICS. > SOUND. > LIGHT. > ELECTRICITY & MAGNETISM. > MEASURING INSTRUMENTS. > ELECTRONICS. > BEHAVIOURAL PSYCHOLOGY. > NATIONAL SCIENCE HISTORY SECTION. > GEMS & PRECIOUS STONES. > MECHANITRONICS. (A whole model displaying the various forces in an amazing way) > MISCELLANEOUS EXHIBITS. MAJOR EXHIBITS:- Some of the major and the most attractive exhibits in the museum are listed as follows: > Talking Computer:- This is a very fascinating exhibit which produces mechanical/electrical voice instead of that due to a human being speaking. > Foucault's Pendulum:- Probably the largest pendulum in south asia, its length is about 85 ft., weight about 109.89Kgs and with a time period of 10.5 sec. > Shahpar Sounding Rocket Exploded view:- The Model displays the internal and external information about the launching and function of the Pakistani designed Shapar & Ghauri Missiles. > Telescopes:- a) Super polar equatorial mount telescope:- This powerful telescope has a diameter of about 75mm. and is labeled with all the information the visitor will like to know about it. b) Reflector type equatorial mount telescope:- This powerful telescope has a diameter of about 200mm. and is also labeled with all the important information. > A Complete mechanically user operated Universe model of a room size is also on display, to explain the to the science students the complete work & principle of the Universe. > Mainframe Computers:- These mainframe computers on display are the ones which were installed in the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore during the early stages of Computer Science center setup in late 60's to early 70's. These were the first computers of their kind in the city of lahore, and the first ever to be installed by any Pakistani University. The specifications of these mainframe computers are as follows: IBM-1130 Model O2C Computing System, Third Generation Computer. ( complete specifications are labeled with the exhibit.)
